Q What do you do?

I’m the one-woman behind Brand Design and Web studio, Play Make.
I offer a host of integrated creative services supporting SME’s and Creative teams within larger organisations. The clients I work with are seeking bold, striking and unforgettable designs that help story tell their brands, giving them the attention they need.

Q What steps did you take to get to where you are now?

I've always loved the flexibility and diversity of being a Graphic Designer. You can in many ways write your own rules when it comes to your career path, which I find liberating.

But, if we were to step back in time, what led me to study Design was my obsession with drawing, painting and creating with my hands. Graphic Design allowed me to blend this with problem solving, purpose and the exploration of more broader creative concepts - connecting visuals with words.

After years of working in-house and a 2 year stint Freelancer in London, I came to settle as my own boss after becoming a Mum, need I say more.

Q How do you stand out in your field?

I guess as a creative we all produce work that stands out in some capacity. But for me more specifically, I feel that my ability to actively listen, ask the right questions and understand my clients, allows me to be approachable and trusted.

Creative work is more than execution and graphic skill, it's about knowing the objectives and purpose of the project. This allows me to deliver design that is meaningful and that's what I am all about.

Q What are you working on right now?

A whole host of fun brand projects, across a range of industries - Hairdressing, Occupational Therapy, Travel, Divorce Coaching and more!

After recently launching my own rebrand (from Rebecca Jane Creative to Play Make Studio), I am working on further finessing my processes, package offerings and templates to ensure my client experience is the best it can be.

Q What’s your style?

My aesthetic would be classified as bold, vibrant and engaging. I'm all about creating work that is anything but beige! I love integrating colour into my work as I believe this brings energy and emotion to the fore, particularly for brand identity projects where a story needs to emerge and engaging with people on a deeper level is paramount.

I would say that my instagram account is the best showcase of my style. There you'll find a mix of projects that tap into my dynamic style.

Q Out of all your slashies, which one do you wish you could do more often?

I'd really love to spend more time off screen! Doing more with my hands - life drawing, pottery and home DIY projects are on the list!

Q What is frustrating you right now?

The 'business' side of business. I tend to get caught up in the romance of running a business whereas the reality is anything but!

I feel like I can always be improving the efficiencies of all the admin but it always feels so forced (and boring) - client work is wayyyyy more fun!

Q If you could hire someone for $20/hour, what would you have them do to make your day easier?

I think you know the answer to this one! All the business-y stuff - admin, accounting and even marketing.

Q What do you wish you could have told yourself, when, and why?

You're not meant to know everything! Everyone is running the hampster wheel and figuring things out as they go and that is OK.

Q If you could talk to an expert to gain more insight on something, what would it be about?

I'd love insights into growing and scaling a business in a sustainable way. I am always looking for the next stage or step in my journey and would love to know how others have been able to make their vision happen whilst staying true to their values and vision.

Q What kind of opportunities/projects are you looking for?

I'd love to be working with more product based brands. Developing an identity that is multi-dimensional and factors in tangible items like packaging, is so exciting to see come to life.

I'm also always looking to partner with in-house creative teams to bring a fresh perspective to their creative output and brand application. When I'm working solo I often miss collaborating with other creatives and like-minded individuals - this work allows me to get pushed and challenged creatively.

Q Describe your ideal job/client/collaboration.

Working with small business owners is really the most rewarding work for me. Whilst I know budgets might not be big, I see the most value in these projects.

Following a clients journey from launch and into the beyond, seeing their confidence and pride explode and knowing that I played a part in this is truly special.

Q: What is your rate?

Brand Identity packages start from $3.5k. However, I do offer tailored pricing depending on each client and their requirements. Head to my website to download my services guide for more information.

Q How should someone approach you about working together?

Usually a DM on instagram or getting in touch via my website is the best way to start.

Alternatively, I can be reached directly at hello@playmake.com.au.

Q Who is a creative you admire?

Bec at Happy Hungry Studio — here work is so vibrant and engaging. She has found a niche that compliments her style and I love how she develops her identity projects inline with physical spaces and experiences.

Q Oh! and… how do you stay creative?

Exercise, meeting new people, exploring new towns and cities and endless Pinterest scrolling.
