WHAT DO YOU DO?

I am a graduating senior at Wake Forest University but unlike most of my peers, I have never felt that college was a phase in my life to define me.

Currently, I have been accepted into a venture accelerator program at my university where I am working on building out my innovative product idea to a first sale. I work two jobs - both in digital marketing - where I focus on the relationship with the end user and the voice the importance of storytelling behind every business. We are breathing creatures with valuable emotions that should be prioritized. I do not treat time like most at my age - I perceive it as the most valuable element we have in life and it is my mission to myself to fill it with everything that makes me feel fulfilled. Despite the “student” title, I have built my own website, voicing my pains and struggles in hopes I can inspire those outside the bubble of university. I have faced many hardships at a young age and I believe it is my responsibility to heal from it.

WHAT STEPS DID YOU TAKE TO GET TO WHERE YOU ARE NOW?

My steps include stubbing my toes on the dirt path I am building for myself and feeling the cool, grounding Earth underneath my bare feet. I've moved forward from facing death and spending months in discomfort to learn more about myself and how I can be the best human in the world around me.

After my mother died when I was 19 years old, the inevitability of our one chance at our life haunted me. How could I make every day feel fulfilling so that before I close my eyes at night I could feel confident that I have lived the best version of my life? Dealing with death and grief at such a young age has shaped my understanding of the world around me. I realized that it is our duty to make sure our life is well spent. The journey itself includes as much darkness as it does light. It is my mission in life to make sure that I experience everything that I desire to experience and share that with the world for communal inspiration.

How do you stand out in your field?

I understand empathy. We cannot obtain a growth mindset if we do not have an understanding of empathy for others. I believe as a creator - understanding what others are experiencing allows me to create content to reach their end needs as best as we can as humans.

WHAT ARE YOU WORKING ON RIGHT NOW?

Right now, I am working on creating a brand that inspires you to stay revitalized and nourished in a world of busy bodies. As a face of the brand, I am creating vibrating compression sleeves to relieve recovery aches and pains we all face as human beings. With the product and mission, I seek to empower those looking to optimize all aspects of their life.

WHAT'S YOUR STYLE/PERSPECTIVE/TASTE? DO YOU HAVE A PROJECT THAT REPRESENTS THIS?

My style is authenticity and empathy. I want to be as honest yet as private with my following to establish the fine line we wobble on in social media. I think social media is a wonderful platform to become motivated and inspired - however, its filtered and curated settings can easily harm the human mentality. A project that represents this is my website emmagecklin.com because I have created a blog post series revolving around life lessons that I have learned from my mom who passed away from cancer. This brings authenticity and empathy to my readers but I leave room for ambiguity to let the reader spin off in their own adventure with self growth.

WE ARE ALL SLASHIES WITH MULTIPLE SKILLS, WHICH ONE DO YOU WISH YOU COULD DO MORE OFTEN?

I would like to focus on branding more because I believe this is an important asset as an entrepreneur.

WHAT IS FRUSTRATING YOU RIGHT NOW?

I am frustrated with other work/life obligations that get in my way and take away from my creative space to work on personal projects (such as my blog).

IF YOU COULD HIRE SOMEONE FOR $20/HR, WHAT WOULD YOU HAVE THEM DO TO MAKE YOUR DAY EASIER?

If I hired someone, I would hire them for accountability, conversation and creative brainstorming to give me designated space to connect with myself and stay creative.

LET'S BRING OUT THE TIME MACHINE. WHAT DO YOU WISH YOU COULD HAVE TOLD YOURSELF, WHEN, AND WHY?

In middle school, I fell for the trap of curated content. Back then, I wish I could have told myself that my voice matters and that I had my own soul different from others - and how that is OKAY. Middle school brings a lot of weird feelings and heavy comparison to others as we navigate our changing bodies and I do not believe there is enough structure and education to these middle schoolers about how weird feelings don’t last forever - and there is a life ahead of you that will overshadow a bad rainy day.

IF YOU COULD TALK TO AN EXPERT TO GAIN MORE INSIGHT ON SOMETHING, WHAT WOULD IT BE ABOUT?

I would love to gain more insight about the power of creativity in fashion and the environment because I think it is an area in life that we do not realize who has powerful value and confidence within us - once we find the right fit.

WHAT KIND OF OPPORTUNITIES/PROJECTS ARE YOU LOOKING FOR?

To grow my blog, website and SEO and personal brand.

DESCRIBE YOUR IDEAL JOB/CLIENT/COLLABORATION.

I would love to work with others who have valuable insight in creating strong personal brands that establish authenticity. Ideally, I would love to help others adopt a growth mindset to unlock their true potential.

Who is a creative that has helped you elevate your work?

-Sarah’s Day
-Rachel Good Eats
-SamanthaInPerson

All three of these ladies have their specific niche and create consistent, authentic content. These are platforms I enjoy looking at all the time as they do not feel redundant nor “salesy”.

HOW SHOULD SOMEONE APPROACH YOU ABOUT WORKING TOGETHER?

Email is the best way to get in touch.

HOW DO YOU STAY CREATIVE?

I step into my discomfort.
