WHAT DO YOU DO?
I’m a jack of all trades, master of none...or am I master of many? I like wearing many hats where no two days are exactly the same.
In a nutshell, I help brands establish their look and show it to the world both digitally and in print.
WHAT STEPS DID YOU TAKE TO GET TO WHERE YOU ARE NOW?
Growing up, I was very meticulous with the layout of my photo albums and how my projects looked for school. Presentation was everything for me. I decided to go to school for graphic design although I hadn’t taken an art class since the 6th grade.
I went to Adelphi University in New York and graduated with a BFA in graphic design and a minor in dance. After that, I worked at the same fashion accessories company for 10 years...who works at the same company for 10 years in this day and age. I did! I worked my way up from intern to graphic artist to assistant art director to creative content and marketing manager. I learned everything from designing products, textile patterns, company collateral and packaging, collaborating with product teams, presenting to clients, managing both in house and freelance designers and so much more.
I also took the User Experience Course at General Assembly to keep learning and growing as a designer.
How do you stand out in your field?
I think ego gets in the way for other designers. Whether they think they are better than the task at hand or think their designs are the be all and end all. Design is about the process and the collaboration to achieve what’s best for the end user. So being able to take constructive criticism and push your designs further will make you a better designer in the end.
WHAT ARE YOU WORKING ON RIGHT NOW?
I’ve been working on personal UX projects to grow my UX knowledge.
WHAT'S YOUR STYLE/PERSPECTIVE/TASTE? DO YOU HAVE A PROJECT THAT REPRESENTS THIS?
Clean and concise. Even when there is a lot going on, there is still a sense of organized chaos.
WE ARE ALL SLASHIES WITH MULTIPLE SKILLS, WHICH ONE DO YOU WISH YOU COULD DO MORE OFTEN?
Film photography. I miss having an actual camera in my hand and working in a darkroom. I shoot with my Dad’s canon which is older than me!
And to dance more...i’m a trained ballet and jazz dancer. Getting to class is one of the last things on my priority list.
WHAT IS FRUSTRATING YOU RIGHT NOW?
Networking! I’m an extroverted introvert. If networking wasn’t necessary to grow as a designer, then I probably wouldn’t do it.
IF YOU COULD HIRE SOMEONE FOR $20/HR, WHAT WOULD YOU HAVE THEM DO TO MAKE YOUR DAY EASIER?
Make my smoothies every morning and my lunch every day. It would be one less thing on my to do list and I could focus on other things.
LET'S BRING OUT THE TIME MACHINE. WHAT DO YOU WISH YOU COULD HAVE TOLD YOURSELF, WHEN, AND WHY?
I would have told my 20-something self, “If you think you’ve outgrown your current role, it is probably time to move on. Bite the bullet and do it. You got this!” And “know your worth!”
IF YOU COULD TALK TO AN EXPERT TO GAIN MORE INSIGHT ON SOMETHING, WHAT WOULD IT BE ABOUT?
UX design. I want to break into the industry and want to learn more about the psychology, the research and the user testing of UX design.
WHAT KIND OF OPPORTUNITIES/PROJECTS ARE YOU LOOKING FOR?
I’m pretty open. Full time or freelance opportunities. Graphic design, art direction or social media. Would really like to work on a live UX project.
DESCRIBE YOUR IDEAL JOB/CLIENT/COLLABORATION.
I would love to work with a brand that challenges me as a designer and wants to collaborate throughout the process. No one likes being a monkey who just pushes buttons. I want to brainstorm and work together to achieve a look that is greater than we both expected.
WHAT IS YOUR HOURLY RATE, RETAINER, OR SALARY RANGE?
I work project based so depending on the scope of the project is how I charge. Let’s chat and we can figure out what works for both of us.
HOW SHOULD SOMEONE APPROACH YOU ABOUT WORKING TOGETHER?
HOW DO YOU STAY CREATIVE?
Travel. Explore. And ME time!
