Kristina Burns
Multimedia Designer / UX Specialist / Illustrator / Brand Strategist

Q What do you do?
I’m all about using creativity to connect people, whether through a polished brand identity, engaging social media campaign, or intuitive digital experience. My expertise stretches across graphic design, UX, video production, and brand development, with a dash of illustration to keep things fun. From crafting digital platforms that just make sense to creating cohesive event branding, I design with purpose, making sure every piece is as meaningful as it is memorable.
Q What steps did you take to get to where you are now?
My love for art and design began early, with AP art in high school and an encouraging professor who awarded me an art scholarship. I earned my BFA in Fine Arts at ISU, including an unforgettable semester in Rome where I fell for art history and culture. From small startups to a recent role as a Multimedia Production Manager at a Fortune 500 company, I’ve led projects in social media, video, and event branding. Now, as a freelancer, I’m thrilled to help clients of all sizes create people-centered designs that connect and inspire.
Q How do you stand out in your field?
I stand out through a mix of technical expertise, a passion for inclusivity, and a love for breaking the rules creatively. User experience is my priority; I make sure designs are intuitive, accessible, and visually inviting. My work has boosted LinkedIn engagement by 22% and driven an 89% engagement rate on a redesigned company intranet. I believe great design should feel effortless, like an open invitation that welcomes everyone in.
Q What are you working on right now?
Currently, I’m building my freelance business and working with a local organization on brand and communication strategies. I’m also exploring ways to use AI to enhance user experiences, which aligns with my passion for connecting people through technology.
Q What’s your style?
My style is organic yet focused. I start by listening to my client’s vision, approaching it holistically, and aiming for designs that feel relatable, innovative, and inclusive. The "Soar 24 Leader Conference" branding is a perfect example—a cohesive experience celebrating growth and learning. The origami bird logo symbolizes transformation, showing how something simple can evolve into something multidimensional, much like the growth participants experience through development and training.
Q Out of all your slashies, which one do you wish you could do more often?
I have started diving deeper into UX design and AI-enhanced interfaces. Exploring how technology can improve accessibility and user engagement is something I’m really passionate about.
Q What is frustrating you right now?
Transitioning from a corporate role to full-time freelancing has its challenges, like finding the right clients and adjusting to a different work rhythm.
Q If you could hire someone for $20/hour, what would you have them do to make your day easier?
I’d hire someone to manage the small tasks that pull me away from creative work, like organizing project files, quick project updates, and scheduling social media posts. Cleaning and making dinner would be a plus!
Q What do you wish you could have told yourself, when, and why?
I’d tell my younger self to embrace the non-linear paths and savor the creative twists. Every experience, even the unexpected or challenging ones, adds new skills and perspectives that make your work richer. I’d also remind myself to be my own cheerleader, especially in a world that’s always shifting. Stick to your core values, trust your intuition, and remember that resilience and authenticity will carry you through any transition.
Q If you could talk to an expert to gain more insight on something, what would it be about?
I’d love to learn more about integrating AI into UX design to make digital experiences more accessible and engaging.
Q What kind of opportunities/projects are you looking for?
I’m drawn to projects where I can use design to build meaningful connections—whether through branding, digital experiences, or multimedia storytelling. I’m especially passionate about mission-driven work that makes a positive impact, like DEI initiatives, mental health advocacy, supporting small businesses (especially female-founded ones), and promoting sustainable brands.
Q Describe your ideal job/client/collaboration.
My ideal client is passionate about their work and values thoughtful design as part of their brand. I enjoy collaborating with clients who trust the process, are open to new ideas, and are committed to creating inclusive, user-centered experiences. I love working with small businesses and see the impact good design can make to a growing company. I am well verse in the large corporate company design projects and feel confident in bring my design expertise, communication skills and passion to help drive those projects forward.
Q: What is your rate?
Every project is unique, so I offer flexible rates based on complexity, channels, and time needed. Graphic design services typically range from $50 to $100 per hour. Branding packages start at $1,500 and scale depending on the project’s scope. I’m also open to working with solopreneurs and nonprofits at discounted rates to support impactful work. I aim to meet my clients where they’re at to create meaningful designs together.
Q How should someone approach you about working together?
Email is the best way to reach me! I like to start with a virtual meeting to learn more about your project. It’s helpful if you can share a brief description, budget, and scope so I can understand how we might work together. I enjoy offering design options, brainstorming, and collaborating closely. For larger projects, I’ll provide a detailed scope and quote before we dive in.
Q Who is a creative you admire?
I’m deeply inspired by the timeless, impactful work of Pentagram, along with legendary designers like Saul Bass, Cipe Pineles, Milton Glaser, and Paula Scher. Their ability to create designs that resonate across generations has always drawn me in. My creative influences extend back to the Renaissance, where artists like Borromini and Bernini continue to shape my appreciation for balance and detail.
In my design realm of designers: Tam Vo - very talented designer that has really excelled in the design field. Michelle Fosse is a graphic designer I studied with in college. She has a great understanding of how to balance design.
Q Oh! and… how do you stay creative?
Eyes wide, ideas brew, Curiosity takes root, New worlds come alive.
