Corbin Christopher Cox
Q What do you do?
I spent the last decade pivoting between available production roles or just tackling projects myself; writing, producing, directing, shooting, editing, coloring. I enjoyed each role and built both technical knowledge of the process and a strong appreciation for the folks who are masters of their niche. From script to screen I’ve run the gamut, but at my core– I consider myself a storyteller.
Q What steps did you take to get to where you are now?
I’ve always held the ethos that a step in any direction is the right direction. In the early days I said yes to everything - sometimes even jobs I wasn't sure I was ready for (guilty of fake it til you make it) which ironically led to consistent work. I leaned on unique taste and most importantly my work ethic and that's led me to head some pretty high stakes projects. Ultimately, taking those leaps of faith built my confidence, ability to adapt on set, and a well-rounded creative skill set that I'm proud of.
Q How do you stand out in your field?
I’ve learned everything revolves around cultivating genuine relationships - how comfortable people feel around you and their ability to remain themselves in fast-paced, high-pressure environments. My work style is a blend of lightheartedness and laser focus– which isn’t always common. But it’s living with levity that has led me to multiple callbacks from people who looked back and remembered how working with me made them FEEL. And of course, it helps to have a standout final product.
Q What are you working on right now?
I’m currently directing and co-producing a talk show centered around LA culture called The Cove: After Dark. It's hosted by celebrity tattoo artist Travis Ross and we dive into the three t’s: tattoos, travel, and tequila. What’s not to love? It was an easy choice to hop on board and we were just renewed for Season 2. In my spare time I’m producing a series of a personal projects called “California Love Letters” which are bite-sized travel films highlighting the geological diversity of this state with a standalone narrative approach to each. For me, it’s so important to keep these types of projects close. They motivate me to nourish my love for the craft, get personal with my surroundings, discover and stay grounded in who I am as an artist.
Q What’s your style?
I’m constantly inspired by unique color and replication of gritty filmic looks. I prefer to shoot with this style in mind but I’m never afraid to keep it more polished (which is often a req for commercial work I do). My favorite is when you can blend the two and I think the current trends are heading in that direction. Check out “Colors of Death Valley” or “Hustle”.
Q Out of all your slashies, which one do you wish you could do more often?
I’d love to continue to "focus" on my cinematography work. It gives me the chance to use my head and my hands, and to me that’s the sweet spot. Directing is just as fun, and working with a good DP is always full of lessons.
Q What is frustrating you right now?
Not being where I want to be, but know I could be. I need to find new avenues of marketing my work and myself. Which brings me here!
Q If you could hire someone for $20/hour, what would you have them do to make your day easier?
Laundry. Please. Anyone out there?
Q What do you wish you could have told yourself, when, and why?
Networking, networking, networking (and why isn’t there a more fun word for it?) I would have told myself to begin networking and building a trustworthy team early on. It's true - everyone knows it, your network is your net worth. People in this industry talk and recommend people they’ve worked with and so it becomes a natural extension. Meet great people, work on great projects, and experience a meteoric shift in your opportunity. I think that's the saying, right?
Q If you could talk to an expert to gain more insight on something, what would it be about?
Listen, if I could talk to a NASA scientist on all things space my life would be made. But that aside, I’d love to talk with someone about how to break into directing features.
Q What kind of opportunities/projects are you looking for?
I’m looking to work with cool people on unique projects in amazing places. If I had to pick a FEW things I’m always itching to iris in on it would be centered around rare people, underdog artists, anything with wheels, sci-fi and space, surfing, cutting-edge technology, classic fashion, wild adventures, wild love, smart living and secret travel spots. PHEW.
Q Describe your ideal job/client/collaboration.
Story is at the center of everything. So my ideal job would be working with a story-first client or company that is looking to showcase profound life themes, unique views, and a human element. I want people to relate and inspire them to chase their "why".
Q What is your rate?
My production day rate is 1200/12 plus kit, which varies based on your needs. Writing, producing & editing rates are typically locked in around $89/hr. I’m always open and flexible too, so if you have something in mind, let’s chat about your needs.
Q How should someone approach you about working together?
Just drop me an email or find me on instagram @corbinccox. Please include a rough idea of what you want plus any budget limitations, and then I can run with that idea. Let’s give your project some wings!
Q Oh! and… how do you stay creative?
